Street Dance Goes to School: A Scene from Dream Threading

ARTPIE created an arts-education experience where elementary and middle-school students in Mapo could encounter street dance inside their own schools.

Why artists went to schools

The Mapo Cultural Foundation's 2022 arts-education project Dream Threading brought together 13 artist teams. Around 1,300 students at 12 elementary and middle schools encountered street dance, traditional performance, wire art, graffiti and other forms within their schools.

ARTPIE led the street-dance program, creating time for students not only to watch a finished performance but to express themselves through movement and rhythm.

Learning collaboration through the body

For students whose opportunities for group activity had been reduced, finding a shared beat and completing a scene together offered a way to learn both expression and relationships. ARTPIE choreographer Kim Seong-gwang said he hoped the process would stimulate creativity and social connection.

Arts education is less about delivering one correct answer than creating a safe place from which each person can begin to move. Dream Threading was a project in which schools and artists made that starting point together.
